IT Fundamentals
Course Description: The IT Fundamentals course is designed to help individuals  learn more about the world of information technology (IT). It is ideal for those considering to upgrade their skills an advance into the IT field or for those who work in an allied field that requires a broader understanding of IT or for those wanting to use it as a stepping stone to more advanced courses in the IT field.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Compare and contrast common Operating Systems and their functions and features
  • Identify common programs, applications and their purpose
  • Given a scenario, use software management best practices
  • Identify alternative technologies such as Cloud Computing, Web applications VoIP etc. and discuss their purpose
  • Explain the basic software features and functions of wireless devices
  • Identify basic wired and wireless peripherals and their purpose
  • Compare and contrast common computer connector types
  • Identify the purpose of internal computer components
  • Define basic security threats
  • Given a scenario, use security best practices
  • Given a scenario, use web-browsing best practices
  • Given a scenario, set up and configure a basic SOHO router (wired / wireless)
  • Compare and contrast cellular, wireless and wired data connections
  • Compare and contrast different methods of sharing and storage
  • Explain the appropriate steps to set up a basic workstation
  • Explain the basic methods of navigating an operating system
  • Given a scenario, implement basic support concepts
  • Explain basic backup concepts
  • Describe the importance and impact of various environmental and safety concepts

What Course Includes 
Instructional Materials: Throughout this course, you will be directed to visit various web sites for additional information that supports the learning concepts. These are recommended for better comprehension of the information presented. Please note, these links will open in a new web browser tab. Make sure to close the opened tab when completed. 

Exercises/Assignments: The exercises/assignments will assess your comprehension and application of the principles covered in the course. Once you answer the assignment questions, you may compare your answers to the answer key.
Module Quizzes/Tests: Upon completion of each module and exercises, there is a module test.  This test will assess your comprehension of the concepts covered within the module presentations. The grade achieved on these tests will be saved in the gradebook for the course.
Final Exam: Upon completion of all the activities in the course, there is a final exam. The exam will focus on all the material covered throughout the course, including reading assignments. Once the exam has been started, it must be completed and submitted, so be sure you have set aside enough time to finish the exam.
